Sony announces the Viao Type P, or why is DeNiro always right
I really want Sony to to die, since I fear that me be the only way to end my addiction.
So we've known about it for a while now, but now that it's official, I look at the press releases on the new Sony Viao P500 and I can feel my resolve melt away. Man am I whipped.
Jen at Pocketables has put up a pretty good summary, but here is a summary. 8-inch high resolution screen, HSPA wireless, sleek, sexy design.
Similar to the old C series of mini laptop Sony put out a decade ago, but with some pretty impressive specs backing it up, this is a contender for my next mobile platform. Don't get me wrong. I really do like my MacBook Air/eMobile USB modem combination, but this device is in an entirely different league.
I'll need to play around with it a bit. I might stop by the Sony Showroom in Ginza where they are supposed to have some set up.
Preorders start tomorrow in Japan and prices and specs are pretty much in line with the US offerings. An Onyx Black P with Vista Business, webcam, 1.86 Ghz Atom processor, 60 GB hard drive, Bluetooth and a US keyboard can be custom ordered for about 130,000 yen.
3G access is supposed to go through DoCoMo, but I think my Softbank Data SIM should work. Softbank still doesn't have an unlimited data plan. Also I need to figure out the power situation. An extended battery offering up to 9 hours is available, but it might kill the line and wiegh it down. I am hoping the the instant-on feature for the Xcrossbar interface will give some power advantages.
Check out the Japanese product page here for more details. I'll post up here as my resolve continues to dwindle.
